* Cancerous.biz has been put on hold at the moment due other obligations. However, it is still in development.
Cancerous.biz is a solo performance piece which explores the interconnections between capitalism and cancer in the 21st century: how do economic structures determine who gets treated and how well? From the perspective of an American living in Britain, the show retells the experience of being misdiagnosed and delayed treatment in the UK, but refused health coverage in the USA. Ultimately receiving treatment in both countries, the story is a testament of the pros and cons of both systems. But it is also a story of defiant victory; from singing and dancing down hospital hallways to sneaking out for a bite of pizza - chemotherapy pole in tow – the story inspires hope and creativity. "If you can laugh at it, you can survive it."
The show also explores how new technologies such as Myspace, Facebook and Youtube are changing the face of cancer and how we remember those who are no longer with us. The big "C-word" is everyone's nightmare but this show gives us a new way to imagine a cancer diagnosis in the twentieth-first century. Not just as a battle against a monster, but as an opportunity to recreate and reconnect.
The show is a series of monologues and songs. This performance is the result of two successful workshop presentations at the Noh Theatre on the campus of Royal Holloway, University of London and the Media Conference of 2008.
